Breast Lift

A breast lift, or mastopexy, reshapes and repositions breast tissue and removes excess skin to raise a breast that has descended. It can also reposition the nipple and refine areola size, with or without an implant depending on the volume you want to preserve or add.

/ Benefits

Benefits of Breast Lift

  • Raises drooping breasts: Improves breast position after pregnancy, weight change or natural ageing.
  • Refines nipple position: Can correct downward-pointing or low nipple position and reduce areola size when appropriate.
  • Uses your own breast tissue: A lift can improve shape without increasing breast volume.

What patients say.

All reviews
From the first consultation, I felt listened to rather than sold to. Everything was explained clearly, including what surgery could and couldn’t achieve. The result feels completely natural — I still look like myself, just more rested.
DIANAGOOGLE JAN 12, 2026
I was nervous about having surgery, but the whole process felt calm and very well organised. The team were reassuring without ever being dismissive, and the follow-up care was excellent.
HELENEGOOGLE DEC 10, 2025
What mattered most to me was that the result didn’t look ‘done’. The change is subtle, balanced and exactly what I hoped for.

/ How it works

How does Breast Lift work

  • Reshapes the breast envelope: Excess skin is removed and the remaining breast tissue is reorganised.
  • Raises nipple position: The nipple and areola are repositioned to suit the new breast shape while usually remaining attached to their blood supply.
  • Balances shape and proportion: Planning accounts for breast width, asymmetry, skin quality and existing volume.
  • Can be combined with augmentation: An implant may be added when more upper-pole fullness or volume is desired.

01Step

Consultation

1. Understanding Your Goals

  • Your priorities: The consultation starts with what you would like to change, what matters most to you and what you hope surgery will achieve.

2. Clinical Assessment

  • Clinical assessment: Dr Mercer assesses anatomy, tissue quality, asymmetry, scars and any factors that may affect the operation or healing.

3. Options, Limits & Planning

  • Options and limits: Suitable surgical options, likely scars, trade-offs and realistic outcomes are discussed rather than assuming that surgery is the right answer.
  • Planning: If you choose to proceed, clinical photography, measurements and a personalised operative plan are completed before a surgery date is confirmed.
02Step

Planning

4–6 weeks before

  • Weight stability: Aim for a stable weight and avoid planning surgery around anticipated major weight loss or pregnancy.
  • Nicotine: Stop smoking and nicotine as instructed because breast skin and nipple healing depend on good blood supply.

2 weeks before

  • Medication review: Follow personalised instructions regarding medicines and supplements.
  • Home support: Arrange help, transport and a supportive postoperative bra.
03Step

Surgery day

Anaesthesia

  • General anaesthetic: Mastopexy is usually performed under general anaesthesia.

Reshaping

  • Skin removal: The scar pattern is selected according to the degree of lift required.
  • Tissue reshaping: Breast tissue is lifted and shaped internally.
  • Nipple repositioning: The nipple-areola complex is moved to a higher position; areola size can be refined.
  • Closure: Incisions are closed in layers and supported with dressings and a surgical bra.
04Step

Recovery

Week 1

  • Expected: Swelling, bruising, tightness and temporary changes in breast sensation are common.

Weeks 2–3

  • Work: Desk work is often possible once comfort and arm movement have improved.

Weeks 4–6

  • Exercise: More vigorous exercise is resumed gradually after review.

3–12 months

  • Scars and shape: Breast shape settles while scars soften and fade progressively.
05Step

Aftercare

First 2 weeks

  • Support: Wear your surgical bra continuously as advised and avoid lifting.
  • Wounds: Keep dressings clean and attend wound reviews.

Weeks 3–6

  • Activity: Increase walking and daily movement while avoiding strenuous chest exercise.
  • Scars: Begin scar care when all incisions are closed.
06Step

Follow-up

Early review

  • What happens: The team checks wounds, swelling, comfort and any dressings during the first postoperative period.

1–2 weeks

  • What happens: Incisions and early healing are reviewed; sutures or dressings are removed when appropriate and activity guidance is updated.

6 weeks

  • What happens: Dr Mercer reviews recovery, scars and return to exercise, and checks that healing is progressing as expected.

3–6 months

  • What happens: Progress photographs may be taken as swelling settles and scars continue to mature.

Around 1 year

  • What happens: A longer-term review can be used to assess the mature result once tissues and scars have fully settled.

Contraindications

When Surgery May Not Be Suitable

  • Uncontrolled medical conditions: Elective surgery may need to be postponed until significant heart, lung, clotting, metabolic or other medical problems are appropriately managed.
  • Nicotine use: Smoking, vaping and nicotine products can materially increase wound-healing and tissue-compromise risks; a nicotine-free period may be required.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Elective aesthetic surgery is normally deferred until pregnancy and breastfeeding are complete and the body has stabilised.
  • Unrealistic expectations: Surgery can change anatomy and proportion, but it cannot create perfect symmetry or guarantee a particular emotional or social outcome.

Risks and side effects

Risks & Possible Complications

All surgery carries risk. Your individual risk profile is discussed during consultation and again as part of the consent process.

  • Scars: Mastopexy creates permanent scars around the areola and, depending on the lift, vertically and sometimes within the breast fold.
  • Wound-healing problems: Small areas can heal slowly, particularly at points of tension.
  • Nipple or skin blood-supply problems: Rarely, tissue can suffer compromised blood supply; nicotine substantially increases this risk.
  • Sensation change: Nipple sensation can increase, decrease or occasionally be permanently altered.
  • Asymmetry: Breast shape and nipple position may not be perfectly symmetrical.
  • Future change: Pregnancy, weight fluctuation and ageing can alter the result over time.

/ FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Does a breast lift make breasts smaller?
A lift removes skin rather than being designed as a reduction, but the breast may look slightly smaller because it is more compact and elevated.
Can I have a lift without implants?
Yes. If you have enough natural breast volume and do not want additional size, mastopexy can be performed without implants.
What scars will I have?
Scar pattern depends on how much lift is needed. It may be around the areola only, around the areola with a vertical scar, or an anchor pattern including the breast fold.
How much does a breast lift cost?
Indicative fees start at £9,500. Combined augmentation-mastopexy is priced separately because the operation is more complex.
