Mini Abdominoplasty

Mini abdominoplasty is a more limited form of abdominal contouring designed for selected patients whose skin excess and laxity are concentrated below the navel. It uses a shorter lower-abdominal incision than a full abdominoplasty and may be combined with limited liposuction where appropriate.

/ Benefits

Benefits of Mini Abdominoplasty

  • Focused correction: Designed for limited skin excess and a persistent lower-abdominal fold or pouch.
  • Shorter scar than a full abdominoplasty: The incision is generally more limited, although its exact length depends on anatomy.
  • Navel usually remains undisturbed: Unlike a full abdominoplasty, the umbilicus typically does not need to be brought through a new opening.
  • Can be combined with liposuction: Selected fat deposits can be treated at the same operation where this improves proportion.

What patients say.

All reviews
From the first consultation, I felt listened to rather than sold to. Everything was explained clearly, including what surgery could and couldn’t achieve. The result feels completely natural — I still look like myself, just more rested.
DIANAGOOGLE JAN 12, 2026
I was nervous about having surgery, but the whole process felt calm and very well organised. The team were reassuring without ever being dismissive, and the follow-up care was excellent.
HELENEGOOGLE DEC 10, 2025
What mattered most to me was that the result didn’t look ‘done’. The change is subtle, balanced and exactly what I hoped for.

/ How it works

How does Mini Abdominoplasty work

  • Targets the lower abdomen: Excess skin below the navel is removed through a low transverse incision.
  • Uses a more limited dissection: The operation usually does not require repositioning of the navel, which distinguishes it from a standard full abdominoplasty.
  • Can tighten selected lower abdominal laxity: Limited muscle repair may be possible when separation is confined mainly below the navel.
  • Can refine localised fullness: Small-volume liposuction may be added to improve contour around the lower abdomen or flanks when suitable.

01Step

Consultation

1. Understanding Your Goals

  • Your priorities: The consultation starts with what you would like to change, what matters most to you and what you hope surgery will achieve.

2. Clinical Assessment

  • Clinical assessment: Dr Mercer assesses anatomy, tissue quality, asymmetry, scars and any factors that may affect the operation or healing.

3. Options, Limits & Planning

  • Options and limits: Suitable surgical options, likely scars, trade-offs and realistic outcomes are discussed rather than assuming that surgery is the right answer.
  • Planning: If you choose to proceed, clinical photography, measurements and a personalised operative plan are completed before a surgery date is confirmed.
02Step

Planning

4–6 weeks before

  • Weight stability: Aim to be at a stable, maintainable weight before surgery.
  • Nicotine: Stop smoking, vaping and nicotine products for the interval advised by Dr Mercer.
  • Health review: Complete any requested blood tests and medication or clot-risk assessment.

1–2 weeks before

  • Medicines and supplements: Follow your individual instructions regarding medicines that may affect bleeding or recovery.
  • Home arrangements: Organise transport, comfortable clothing and practical help for the first few days if needed.
03Step

Surgery day

Anaesthesia

  • General anaesthetic: Mini abdominoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia.

Operative sequence

  • Low incision: A transverse incision is placed low on the abdomen and planned around the amount of skin to be removed.
  • Limited elevation: Tissues are elevated mainly below the navel rather than across the full abdominal wall.
  • Selective tightening: Limited lower-abdominal muscle repair can be performed when indicated.
  • Skin removal: Excess lower-abdominal skin is removed and the remaining skin is redraped without routinely repositioning the navel.
  • Optional contouring: Limited liposuction may be added to adjacent areas where appropriate.
  • Closure: The incision is closed in layers and a compression garment is applied.
04Step

Recovery

Days 1–7

  • Expected: Tightness, swelling, bruising and pulling around the lower abdominal incision are common.

Weeks 2–3

  • Work and mobility: Many patients return to non-physical work as comfort improves, while lifting remains restricted.

Weeks 4–6

  • Exercise: Exercise and abdominal loading are reintroduced progressively after review.

3–12 months

  • Maturation: Residual swelling settles and the lower-abdominal scar gradually softens and fades.
05Step

Aftercare

First 1–2 weeks

  • Compression: Wear the recommended garment and keep the incision supported as advised.
  • Walking: Short, regular walks are encouraged from the early postoperative period while strenuous activity is avoided.
  • Wound care: Keep dressings clean and attend the scheduled early review.

Weeks 3–6

  • Activity: Increase normal activity gradually while avoiding heavy lifting and abdominal strain until cleared.
  • Scar care: Silicone, massage or other scar care can begin once the incision is fully healed and reviewed.
06Step

Follow-up

Early review

  • What happens: The team checks wounds, swelling, comfort and any dressings during the first postoperative period.

1–2 weeks

  • What happens: Incisions and early healing are reviewed; sutures or dressings are removed when appropriate and activity guidance is updated.

6 weeks

  • What happens: Dr Mercer reviews recovery, scars and return to exercise, and checks that healing is progressing as expected.

3–6 months

  • What happens: Progress photographs may be taken as swelling settles and scars continue to mature.

Around 1 year

  • What happens: A longer-term review can be used to assess the mature result once tissues and scars have fully settled.

Contraindications

When Surgery May Not Be Suitable

  • Skin excess extends above the navel: A mini abdominoplasty cannot adequately treat substantial upper-abdominal laxity; a full abdominoplasty may be more appropriate.
  • Significant rectus separation: More extensive muscle laxity often requires the wider access of a full abdominoplasty.
  • Uncontrolled medical conditions: Elective surgery may need to be postponed until significant medical problems are appropriately managed.
  • Nicotine use: Smoking, vaping and nicotine products increase wound-healing and tissue-compromise risks; a nicotine-free period may be required.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Elective abdominal surgery is normally deferred until pregnancy and breastfeeding are complete and the body has stabilised.
  • Unrealistic expectations: The procedure is intended for a limited anatomical problem and cannot reproduce the effect of a full abdominoplasty where more extensive correction is needed.

Risks and side effects

Risks & Possible Complications

All surgery carries risk. Your individual risk profile is discussed during consultation and again as part of the consent process.

  • Bleeding and haematoma: A collection of blood may occasionally require treatment or further surgery.
  • Seroma: Fluid can collect beneath the abdominal tissues and may need aspiration.
  • Infection: Infection is uncommon but may require antibiotics or additional treatment.
  • Delayed wound healing: Areas of the incision can take longer to heal, particularly where blood supply is compromised.
  • Scarring and altered sensation: A permanent lower-abdominal scar and temporary or lasting numbness around the scar can occur.
  • Contour asymmetry: Small differences in contour, residual fullness or skin laxity may remain.
  • Blood clots: DVT and pulmonary embolism are recognised risks of surgery and preventive measures are individualised.

/ FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mini and full abdominoplasty?
A mini abdominoplasty is limited mainly to the lower abdomen below the navel. A full abdominoplasty treats a larger skin envelope, usually allows more extensive muscle repair and normally involves repositioning the navel within the redraped skin.
Will my belly button be moved?
Usually not. In a typical mini abdominoplasty the navel remains in place, although the exact technique depends on your anatomy.
Can mini abdominoplasty be combined with liposuction?
Yes. Limited liposuction of the lower abdomen or flanks is sometimes combined with surgery when it improves contour and remains appropriate for the planned operation.
Who is most suitable for a mini abdominoplasty?
The best candidates usually have a relatively small amount of loose skin or a persistent lower-abdominal pouch below the navel, with limited rather than extensive muscle laxity.
How much does mini abdominoplasty cost?
Mini abdominoplasty is typically £8,500 in this demo fee schedule. Where limited liposuction is added, combined surgery is quoted according to the areas treated.
