Liposuction

Liposuction removes selected deposits of subcutaneous fat through small cannula incisions to improve contour. It is a shaping procedure, not a treatment for obesity, cellulite or significant loose skin, and works best when weight is stable and skin has reasonable elasticity.

Liposuction

/ Benefits

Benefits of Liposuction

  • Reduces stubborn localised fat: Can improve deposits that remain despite stable weight and lifestyle.
  • Refines body proportion: Useful across abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms and selected smaller areas.
  • Small access scars: Cannula incisions are short and positioned discreetly where possible.

What patients say.

All reviews
From the first consultation, I felt listened to rather than sold to. Everything was explained clearly, including what surgery could and couldn’t achieve. The result feels completely natural — I still look like myself, just more rested.
DIANAGOOGLE JAN 12, 2026
I was nervous about having surgery, but the whole process felt calm and very well organised. The team were reassuring without ever being dismissive, and the follow-up care was excellent.
HELENEGOOGLE DEC 10, 2025
What mattered most to me was that the result didn’t look ‘done’. The change is subtle, balanced and exactly what I hoped for.

/ How it works

How does Liposuction work

  • Targets localised fat: Small cannulas remove fat from selected areas such as abdomen, flanks, thighs or arms.
  • Shapes transitions: Treatment is planned across anatomical zones to create smoother contour rather than simply removing the maximum amount of fat.
  • Relies on skin retraction: The final result depends partly on how well the overlying skin contracts.
  • Can complement other surgery: Liposuction is often used selectively alongside abdominoplasty or other contouring procedures.

01Step

Consultation

1. Understanding Your Goals

  • Your priorities: The consultation starts with what you would like to change, what matters most to you and what you hope surgery will achieve.

2. Clinical Assessment

  • Clinical assessment: Dr Mercer assesses anatomy, tissue quality, asymmetry, scars and any factors that may affect the operation or healing.

3. Options, Limits & Planning

  • Options and limits: Suitable surgical options, likely scars, trade-offs and realistic outcomes are discussed rather than assuming that surgery is the right answer.
  • Planning: If you choose to proceed, clinical photography, measurements and a personalised operative plan are completed before a surgery date is confirmed.
02Step

Planning

2–4 weeks before

  • Weight stability: Avoid crash dieting; liposuction is best planned at a stable weight.
  • Nicotine: Stop nicotine as advised.
  • Medication: Complete medication, supplement and clot-risk review.

Before surgery

  • Compression garment: Obtain the recommended postoperative garment.
  • Transport: Arrange a responsible adult to take you home and stay initially if required.
03Step

Surgery day

Anaesthesia

  • Anaesthesia: Small areas may sometimes be treated with local anaesthesia and sedation; larger or multiple areas are commonly treated under general anaesthesia.

Contouring

  • Fluid infiltration: Tumescent fluid is introduced to help control bleeding and facilitate fat removal.
  • Cannula treatment: Fat is removed through small incisions using controlled passes.
  • Balance: Both sides and adjacent zones are repeatedly assessed for proportion and smooth transitions.
  • Compression: A garment is fitted after surgery to support the treated tissues.
04Step

Recovery

Days 1–7

  • Expected: Bruising, swelling, soreness and fluid leakage from small access sites can occur early on.

Weeks 2–3

  • Work: Many patients return to non-physical work while continuing compression.

Weeks 4–6

  • Exercise: More vigorous exercise is gradually resumed.

3–6 months

  • Final contour: Residual swelling reduces progressively and the contour becomes more defined.
05Step

Aftercare

First 2 weeks

  • Compression: Wear your garment for the period advised; bruising and swelling are expected.
  • Walking: Walk regularly from the first day but avoid strenuous activity.

Weeks 3–6

  • Activity: Resume exercise gradually while swelling continues to settle.
  • Massage: Manual lymphatic drainage may be advised selectively, but it is not mandatory for every patient.
06Step

Follow-up

Early review

  • What happens: The team checks wounds, swelling, comfort and any dressings during the first postoperative period.

1–2 weeks

  • What happens: Incisions and early healing are reviewed; sutures or dressings are removed when appropriate and activity guidance is updated.

6 weeks

  • What happens: Dr Mercer reviews recovery, scars and return to exercise, and checks that healing is progressing as expected.

3–6 months

  • What happens: Progress photographs may be taken as swelling settles and scars continue to mature.

Around 1 year

  • What happens: A longer-term review can be used to assess the mature result once tissues and scars have fully settled.

Contraindications

When Surgery May Not Be Suitable

  • Uncontrolled medical conditions: Elective surgery may need to be postponed until significant heart, lung, clotting, metabolic or other medical problems are appropriately managed.
  • Nicotine use: Smoking, vaping and nicotine products can materially increase wound-healing and tissue-compromise risks; a nicotine-free period may be required.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Elective aesthetic surgery is normally deferred until pregnancy and breastfeeding are complete and the body has stabilised.
  • Unrealistic expectations: Surgery can change anatomy and proportion, but it cannot create perfect symmetry or guarantee a particular emotional or social outcome.
  • Significant skin laxity: Liposuction alone can make loose skin more apparent; skin-removal surgery may be more appropriate in some areas.

Risks and side effects

Risks & Possible Complications

All surgery carries risk. Your individual risk profile is discussed during consultation and again as part of the consent process.

  • Contour irregularity: Unevenness, dents or asymmetry can occur, particularly where skin quality is limited.
  • Seroma and swelling: Fluid accumulation and prolonged oedema can occur.
  • Bleeding and infection: These are uncommon but recognised surgical risks.
  • Changes in sensation: Temporary numbness or altered skin sensitivity is common.
  • Blood clots: Risk rises with larger-volume or multi-area surgery and is assessed individually.
  • Fat embolism or fluid imbalance: Rare but serious complications are possible, particularly with extensive liposuction.

/ FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is liposuction a weight-loss treatment?
No. It removes localised fat to improve shape and proportion. It is not a substitute for weight loss or treatment of obesity.
Will fat come back?
Removed fat cells do not regrow in the same number, but remaining fat cells can enlarge with weight gain and body shape can still change over time.
Does liposuction tighten loose skin?
Only to a limited degree. Patients with significant skin laxity may need a skin-removal procedure for the best contour.
How much does liposuction cost?
Fees depend on the number and size of areas treated. Indicative pricing starts at £6,000 for a single area.
