Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty reshapes the framework of the nose to change proportion, profile, width or tip shape while respecting facial balance and nasal function. Planning is highly individual because small structural changes can have a large visual and functional effect.

/ Benefits

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

  • Improves facial proportion: Can reduce disproportion between the nose and surrounding facial features.
  • Addresses several features in one plan: Hump, tip, width, projection and asymmetry can be considered together.
  • Structural approach: Modern rhinoplasty aims to preserve or restore support rather than simply remove tissue.

What patients say.

All reviews
From the first consultation, I felt listened to rather than sold to. Everything was explained clearly, including what surgery could and couldn’t achieve. The result feels completely natural — I still look like myself, just more rested.
DIANAGOOGLE JAN 12, 2026
I was nervous about having surgery, but the whole process felt calm and very well organised. The team were reassuring without ever being dismissive, and the follow-up care was excellent.
HELENEGOOGLE DEC 10, 2025
What mattered most to me was that the result didn’t look ‘done’. The change is subtle, balanced and exactly what I hoped for.

/ How it works

How does Rhinoplasty work

  • Changes the nasal framework: Bone and cartilage can be reshaped, repositioned or supported.
  • Balances profile and frontal view: Planning considers the nose from multiple angles rather than treating one isolated feature.
  • Refines the tip where needed: Tip cartilage can be reshaped or supported with sutures and grafts.
  • Protects breathing: Internal support and airway function are considered during aesthetic planning; functional surgery may be incorporated when indicated.

01Step

Consultation

1. Understanding Your Goals

  • Your priorities: The consultation starts with what you would like to change, what matters most to you and what you hope surgery will achieve.

2. Clinical Assessment

  • Clinical assessment: Dr Mercer assesses anatomy, tissue quality, asymmetry, scars and any factors that may affect the operation or healing.

3. Options, Limits & Planning

  • Options and limits: Suitable surgical options, likely scars, trade-offs and realistic outcomes are discussed rather than assuming that surgery is the right answer.
  • Planning: If you choose to proceed, clinical photography, measurements and a personalised operative plan are completed before a surgery date is confirmed.
02Step

Planning

Before surgery

  • Nasal assessment: External shape, septum, airway and skin thickness are assessed.
  • Photography: Standardised photographs support detailed planning and discussion of realistic change.
  • Nicotine and medicines: Follow instructions on nicotine, medications and supplements before surgery.

Final preparation

  • Illness: Tell the clinic about colds, sinus infection or skin inflammation before the operation.
  • Transport: Arrange an adult to take you home and stay with you initially.
03Step

Surgery day

Anaesthesia

  • General anaesthetic: Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia.

Reshaping

  • Approach: Surgery may be open or closed depending on the planned changes.
  • Bone and cartilage: The bridge, nasal bones and cartilaginous framework are reshaped as required.
  • Grafts and sutures: Cartilage grafts or structural sutures can refine and support the nose.
  • Splint: An external splint is commonly applied for around one week.
04Step

Recovery

Week 1

  • Appearance: A splint is worn; bruising around the eyes and nasal swelling are common.

Weeks 2–3

  • Social recovery: Most bruising improves substantially and many patients return to work.

Weeks 4–6

  • Exercise: Exercise is increased gradually while contact risk remains restricted.

6–18 months

  • Refinement: The bridge settles earlier; the tip continues to refine gradually.
05Step

Aftercare

First week

  • Splint care: Keep the external splint dry and avoid pressure on the nose.
  • Head elevation: Sleep elevated and avoid bending, straining and nose blowing as directed.

Weeks 2–6

  • Protect the nose: Avoid contact sport, heavy glasses pressure and situations where the nose could be knocked.
  • Sun: Use high-factor sun protection while swelling and scars settle.
06Step

Follow-up

Early review

  • What happens: The team checks wounds, swelling, comfort and any dressings during the first postoperative period.

1–2 weeks

  • What happens: Incisions and early healing are reviewed; sutures or dressings are removed when appropriate and activity guidance is updated.

6 weeks

  • What happens: Dr Mercer reviews recovery, scars and return to exercise, and checks that healing is progressing as expected.

3–6 months

  • What happens: Progress photographs may be taken as swelling settles and scars continue to mature.

Around 1 year

  • What happens: A longer-term review can be used to assess the mature result once tissues and scars have fully settled.

Contraindications

When Surgery May Not Be Suitable

  • Uncontrolled medical conditions: Elective surgery may need to be postponed until significant heart, lung, clotting, metabolic or other medical problems are appropriately managed.
  • Nicotine use: Smoking, vaping and nicotine products can materially increase wound-healing and tissue-compromise risks; a nicotine-free period may be required.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Elective aesthetic surgery is normally deferred until pregnancy and breastfeeding are complete and the body has stabilised.
  • Unrealistic expectations: Surgery can change anatomy and proportion, but it cannot create perfect symmetry or guarantee a particular emotional or social outcome.
  • Active nasal or skin infection: Surgery should be deferred until infection or significant inflammation has resolved.

Risks and side effects

Risks & Possible Complications

All surgery carries risk. Your individual risk profile is discussed during consultation and again as part of the consent process.

  • Bleeding and infection: Nasal bleeding is expected to a limited degree; significant bleeding or infection is uncommon.
  • Breathing change: Temporary blockage is common; persistent airway problems can occur and may require treatment.
  • Asymmetry or contour irregularity: Small irregularities can remain or emerge as swelling resolves.
  • Prolonged swelling: Tip swelling can persist for many months, particularly in thicker skin.
  • Altered smell or sensation: Temporary changes can occur.
  • Revision surgery: Because healing is biological and rhinoplasty is technically exacting, a minority of patients consider revision once the result has fully matured.

/ FAQs

Frequently asked questions

When will I see the final result?
The main change is visible when the splint comes off, but swelling continues to reduce for many months. Tip definition can take 12 months or longer to fully settle.
Can rhinoplasty improve breathing?
It can when functional problems are specifically assessed and treated, but cosmetic rhinoplasty alone should not be assumed to correct every breathing problem.
Will my nose be broken?
Not in every rhinoplasty. Nasal bones are repositioned only when needed for the planned change.
How much does rhinoplasty cost?
Indicative cosmetic rhinoplasty fees start at £11,000, with more complex septorhinoplasty priced separately.
